Tom has given his academic blessing to these secondary characters and props, so I am moving forward with one pertinent design before I start doing layout and animation of my production pipeline shot. It’s getting pretty exciting. There are a few of these designs (particularly the animals,props and a couple of the others) that I am very, very pleased with. Overall I’m just happy. Hope you like them too.

Here are some designs for background or secondary characters. Tom gave me some drawovers and we spent a lot of time discussing how to make the designs more uniform, so that the level of cartoony-ness and design hierarchy from one to the other was more uniform. Part of the issue, I think, is me trying to meet his expectations, based on his design sensibilities, and me trying to draw what I like, which is a different sensibility. Wad that up with my lack of knowledge and experience in comparison with the width of his, and I was destined for some notes. It’s hard to be so forthcoming sometimes, but that was something I set down as a point of emphasis for how I wanted this film presented. These notes left me feeling a little raw, and as a professional artist, there is always going to be a critique or two that does that to you. But that’s okay. The silver lining here is that there were some designs that he didn’t touch at all. 3 out of 12 designs (that’s not the actual number) with no notes from Tom is a bit of a win there, and in the end, revisions are only going to reveal new things and make everything better. You have to always keep that in your mind, so you don’t get too precious about drawings, especially ones for characters that, truthfully, won’t matter much in the end.
